"The Streets are Full with Love and Community"

The Queen was bang on in her speech last night when she said that the streets are full of love. Yes we are socially distancing and no we can’t hug our loved ones… we can’t even share a bottle of wine or a have a pot of tea together but we can celebrate all that’s good in the world together and that’s what we did yesterday afternoon to show our appreciation to the heroes of WW2 and our Victory in Europe 75 years ago.

Our street, like thousands of others in the UK celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day 2020 by having a socially distanced street party. Sadly I have heard through friends and social media that not all streets in our town followed the rules and many rightly feel highly upset and angry about this.. let me reassure you that our street certainly did follow the guidelines, everyone stuck to their own piece of land, brought their own drink and food. The only things we shared were smiles, music and chat. We even had a life size Dalek join us! Some of us even danced and still maintained the 2 meter rule.

Some dressed up and we all made an effort. It was a gorgeous sunny day, full of joy, music, respect. Completely intergenerational from babies to people in the 80’s. Even my mum, who is wheelchair bound and doesn’t go out joined in.

Big thanks to everyone that allowed me to take their photos and I really enjoyed seeing all the pictures of the WW2 heroes on my street.. your dads, granddads and uncles… amazing! Also a specially HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Victoria who turned 75 yesterday… born on VE day itself… not a bad birthday to share!

Here are our socially distanced best bits:
